Sea Trials Include (but are not limited to) the following:
During your Jacksonville Boat Inspection, a sea trial is a critical part of any comprehensive marine survey. We conduct a sea trial with the vessel underway, this hands-on test allows us to evaluate the boat’s performance, mechanical systems, and seaworthiness under real-world conditions. Here’s what’s typically noted and tested during a sea trial:
1. Engine & Propulsion Performance
Start-up behavior: Cold start and warm restart.
- Throttle response and acceleration: Checked for smoothness and power.
- RPM vs. Speed: Assessed for proper propeller sizing and engine loading.
- Engine temperature and oil pressure: Monitored for safe operating ranges.
- Vibrations and unusual noises: Evaluated during operation at various speeds.
- Transmission operation: Shift quality and engagement in forward and reverse.
2. Steering & Handling
Steering response: Checked for precision and delay.
- Turning radius and tracking: Noted at low and cruising speeds.
- Autopilot (if installed): Tested for functionality and responsiveness.
3. Electrical & Electronic Systems
Navigation instruments: Verified for accuracy and operation.
- Radar, GPS, and sonar systems: Checked for signal strength and clarity.
- Lighting and alarms: Ensured all are functioning under load.
- Battery performance: Load tested during engine operation.
4. Hull & Structural Integrity
Hull performance: Observed for slamming, tracking, and planning behavior.
- Water intrusion: Checked in bilges and through-hulls for leaks under way.
- Deck fittings and railings: Observed for excessive movement or strain.
5. Safety Equipment
- Bilge pumps: Manually and automatically tested.
- Fire suppression systems: Visually inspected for readiness.
- Navigation and anchor lights: Confirmed operational during trial if possible.
6. Comfort & Ancillary Systems
- HVAC systems: Checked for cooling/heating under load.
- Stabilizers and trim tabs: Tested for effect and operation.
- Generator (if equipped): Started and load tested with major systems.
Why It Matters
A sea trial reveals how a vessel truly performs beyond the dock. It uncovers potential issues not visible during an on-land inspection and validates the functionality of key systems. Our marine surveyors document findings in a detailed report, giving you the information needed for confident ownership or negotiation.
